Say Hello To Victoria Ampumuza!

Child Summary

Victoria is primary school age. She likes to sing and to pray. She lives with her mother. Victoria resides in the western region of Uganda, an area where children face significant hurdles to their well-being and future success. In this region, Victoria is particularly vulnerable to the regional threats of AIDS and exploitation. Without intervention, she is likely to fall among the 85% of Ugandan children who never graduate from secondary school due to high regional poverty. Victoria’s native language is Runyankole, with minimal English skills. Gaining sponsorship will enable her enrollment into a high-quality Christian boarding school, learning fluency in English and other core skills, while growing in a safe and nurturing environment.

Country Summary

Uganda is a landlocked East African nation famed for its diverse landscape, which includes the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, the vast Lake Victoria, and the winding Nile River. Its geography transitions from lush, fertile plateaus in the south to semi-arid savannas in the northeast. The climate is predominantly tropical, though tempered by the country’s high altitude.

The population is composed of over 40 ethnic groups, with the Baganda being the largest. While English and Swahili are the official languages, dozens of indigenous tongues like Luganda and Runyankole are widely spoken. Christianity is the primary religion, followed by a significant Muslim minority. Uganda’s economy is heavily dependent on agriculture; it is one of the world's leading producers of coffee, alongside exports of tea, fish, and gold. The GDP per capita (PPP) of Uganda in 2024 was $986 (that means the average person earns less than $1,000 per year in income to live off of). Poverty levels are high and ensuring education for children is challenging.
